Traditional definitions of essential human needs focus on the trichotomy of food (and water), shelter and clothing. At the UN, basic needs are synonymous with human rights and with the Sustainable Development Goals, that list has expanded to include sanitation and a broader definition of health. UNESCO also considers education a fundamental human right as a requisite to the expression of individual freedom. This panel will give their take on whether this list is realistic, apt or exhaustive; and by moving from the theoretical to the practical, we will engage with some of the most innovative for profit and not-for-profit organisations on the planet and gain insight into how they are addressing basic human needs in practice.
